Healing the Coastline

Sunken Meadow State Park on Long Island received a major environmental boost this week. A 1.5 million dollar award from the Long Island Sound Futures Fund will support the restoration of 14 acres of salt marsh — an ecosystem that protects coastlines, supports marine life, and absorbs carbon from the atmosphere.

Why Salt Marshes Matter

Salt marshes act like nature’s shield. They reduce storm damage, improve water quality, and provide critical nursery habitat for fish, birds, and other marine species. Yet many marshes have been lost to development, erosion, and pollution.

A Project With Long-Term Vision

The new funding will help rebuild tidal flow, remove outdated infrastructure, and replant native vegetation. Conservationists believe the project will restore natural balance to Sunken Meadow’s coastline and create a more resilient habitat for decades to come.
