Karl Bushby’s Epic Walk: 27 Years of Adventure

Karl Bushby’s 27-Year Journey Nears Completion.

In 1998, Karl Bushby set out from the southern tip of South America with two simple rules: no mechanical transportation, and no going home until he’d walked around the entire world. Twenty-seven years later, the 56-year-old British man is about to finish.

Bushby started when he was 29 years old and has walked over 30,000 miles across the Americas, Russia, Asia, and now Europe. His journey has been far from easy. In 2000, he crossed the dangerous Darién Gap, the only land route between South and Central America, through a war zone with cartels and tough jungle terrain. He crossed from Alaska into Siberia and encountered a polar bear. When Russia and Iran wouldn’t let him pass through, he swam the Caspian Sea. Now he may need to swim the English Channel to get home.

Why did he do it? Bushby says life is short and he wanted to live it to the fullest. As he nears the end, he admits feeling uncomfortable about what comes next. He compares it to retiring from a career and figuring out the next chapter.

🦉 The Heart of It: Sometimes the greatest journeys teach us that arriving isn’t the point. It’s who we become along the way. Karl Bushby walked 30,000 miles and discovered that the human spirit, when truly committed, can cross any distance. What matters isn’t just where we’re going, but that we keep moving forward, one step at a time.
