Grief has a way of breaking us open—and sometimes, what pours out changes everything. In Sterling Ranch, Colorado, Jeanette Reynolds transformed her deepest heartbreak into a gift that’s bringing joy to hundreds of children across her community.

Reynolds’ daughter Madison was born with lissencephaly, a rare genetic condition causing severe developmental challenges. Madison couldn’t walk, talk, or eat on her own, and finding wheelchair-accessible parks where she could simply play like other children felt nearly impossible. “The closest park we eventually found that she could kind of use was over an hour away,” Reynolds recalls. But whenever Madison did find a place she could enjoy, her face would light up instantly—a moment of pure joy that her mother held onto long after Madison passed away in 2018 at age 24.

Instead of retreating into sorrow, Reynolds channeled her pain into action. She launched Miles 4 Madison, a nonprofit dedicated to creating truly inclusive recreational spaces. After years of fundraising through 5K races and partnering with Sterling Ranch, her dream became reality: a fully accessible regional park where every child belongs.

The park isn’t just wheelchair-accessible—it was designed with input from families with special needs children. It features an in-ground trampoline, slides safe for children with cochlear implants, quiet cocoon spaces for sensory breaks, and smooth surfaces throughout. On any given evening, hundreds of kids play together here—children of all abilities laughing side by side.

“For me, it means everything to know that my daughter would have been included,” Reynolds says, often moved to tears watching the park buzz with life.

The organization has since expanded to offer sensory swims, adapted Easter egg hunts, and sensory Santa visits. Next year, an accessible pool will be added. Madison’s legacy lives on in every child’s laughter, every friendship formed, every family that finally has a place where they truly belong.
