The World Health Organization released the figures on November 28, and they tell a story of transformation. Measles deaths dropped 88% between 2000 and 2024. Nearly 59 million lives were saved. Deaths fell from 780,000 in 2000 to 95,000 in 2024, the lowest annual toll in decades.

“The measles vaccine has saved more lives than any other childhood immunization in the past 50 years,” said Kate O’Brien, who heads WHO’s Department of Immunization, Vaccines, and Biologicals. “This is a remarkable public health achievement and a testament to what coordinated global action can accomplish.”

The Invisible Threat Returns

But the report comes with a warning. Despite fewer deaths, measles cases are surging worldwide, with an estimated 11 million infections in 2024, nearly 800,000 more than pre-pandemic levels in 2019.

“Measles is the world’s most contagious virus,” said Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General. “Measles does not respect borders, but when every child in every community is vaccinated against it, costly outbreaks can be avoided, lives can be saved, and this disease can be eliminated from entire nations.”

Progress and Setbacks

By the end of 2024, 96 countries had eliminated measles. In 2024, an estimated 84% of children received their first measles vaccine dose, and 76% received the second. That’s progress from previous years but still short of the 95% threshold needed for full protection. More than 30 million children remained under-protected.
