Indonesia Defeats Polio: 60 Million Vaccine Doses Administered, WHO Declares Outbreak Over
Nation introduces six-in-one vaccine to protect children against polio, diphtheria, tetanus, hepatitis B, pneumonia and meningitis simultaneously.
Indonesia has officially ended its outbreak of poliovirus type 2, which arose from years of low polio immunization coverage, after nearly 60 million additional doses of polio vaccine were administered to children during the response. The World Health Organization declared the outbreak closure on November 19, 2025, after no poliovirus had been detected in children or the environment since June 2024.
Minister of Health Budi Gunadi Sadikin credited the victory to “the dedication of our health workers, commitment of parents and communities to get the children vaccinated and the support of our partners.” The achievement represents years of coordinated effort across the vast Indonesian archipelago, reaching remote island communities to ensure comprehensive vaccination coverage.
To accelerate immunization, the Ministry of Health initiated use of a hexavalent vaccine combining DPT-HB-Hib and IPV in a single injection, providing protection against six diseases simultaneously: polio, diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus, hepatitis B, as well as pneumonia and meningitis. The program began in October 2025 in select provinces, with nationwide rollout planned for the coming year, reducing injection burdens on children while saving time and money for families.
The Heart of It: When communities unite for children’s health, diseases once thought conquered can be defeated again. Indonesia’s victory over polio reminds us that dedication, science, and collective action can overcome even the most stubborn public health challenges.
