18-Month-Old Goes Home for First Time Just in Time for Thanksgiving
For the first 18 months of her life, Leah Montayes Macias had never felt grass beneath her feet, never breathed fresh autumn air, never experienced the simple joy of being home. The walls of Blythedale Children’s Hospital in New York were all she’d ever known.
Born a staggering 16 weeks early and weighing just over one pound, Leah entered the world facing impossible odds. Her tiny body struggled with a heart condition, a brain bleed, dangerously high blood pressure in her lungs, and chronic breathing issues that required constant medical intervention. Each day was a battle, each milestone a triumph.
Her parents, Stephanie Macias and Andy Montayes, describe the journey as “an 18-month roller coaster ride”—one filled with fear, hope, setbacks, and small victories. They’ve been holding onto this moment for what felt like forever, never quite believing it would actually come.
But it did. Just in time for Thanksgiving 2025, Leah finally went home.
Through intensive therapy and round-the-clock care, this remarkably strong little girl defied every expectation. What Dr. M. Susan LaTuga calls Leah’s “sparkly personality” shone through even the hardest days, giving her family the strength to keep believing.
Now, as Leah experiences her first Thanksgiving at home with her family, the Macias-Montayes household has more to be grateful for than most could imagine. The sound of medical equipment has been replaced by the ordinary, beautiful chaos of family life. The hospital rooms that defined Leah’s entire existence are now just memories.
For a family that spent 18 months living between hope and fear, watching their daughter’s every breath, settling into “everyday life” feels nothing short of miraculous. This Thanksgiving, they’re celebrating something most families take for granted—simply being home together. And for them, that’s everything.
